Newly-crowned world marathon record holder Brigid Kosgei, Chicago Marathon champion Lawrence Cherono, Eliud Kipchoge and other athletes arrived in the country quietly and to no fan fair at all despite their heroics.
Kosgei returned to the country on Tuesday, October 15, night to a low key reception by her family members while Cherono arrived at the Eldoret Airport on Wednesday, October 16.
A report by NTV showed Kosgei was later treated to a reception at Riadha House by Athletics Kenya led by president Jackson Tuwe on Wednesday, October 16.
Cherono, who also won the Boston Marathon in April, on the other hand was received by a handful of his family members who sang and danced to traditional songs and treated to traditional milk, mursik.
Another athlete who sneaked back in the country after showing he is the greatest man in the history of athletics was Eliud Kipchoge who went straight to his home in Eldoret.
Others include athletes who participated in the IAAF World Athletics Championships Doha 2019 where Kenya finished second among them Ruth Chepngetich and Conseslus Kipruto
The athletes returned home to a cold reception despite their exemplary performances while receiving global recognition as they flew the Kenyan flag high on the global map.
Kenya Airports Authority had on Saturday, October 5, intimated that a special reward for Kipruto was in the offing after he retained the men’s 3000 metres steeplechase gold in Doha.
The reward was to be a billboard bearing a specific image of the athlete moments after winning the race and that it would be displayed at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).
The image shows him sitting on a hurdle with one of his fingers on his lips indicating that he might have been in a deep introspection moment.
The government has, however, planned a major reception for all the athletes who competed in the Chicago Marathon, World Athletics Championship and for Eliud Kipchoge.
So just when will we start to truly celebrate our own champions, not just on social media, before they are poached by other countries?
