– Man United vs Rochdale finished 1-1 after regulation time
– Mason Greenwood scored the opener for United with Luke Matheson restoring parity for the visitors
– The match was subsequently decided in the shootouts that the Red Devils won 5-3
Daniel James’ well-taken penalty was all Man United needed as they sunk League One side Rochdale 5-3 in the shootouts in the third round of the EFL Cup played at Old Trafford.
United were out to make amends to their 2-0 defeat suffered in the hands of West Ham last weekend at London Stadium.
The defeat left Ole Gunnar Solskajer and his players under immense pressure and were therefore desperate to bounce back to winning ways.
Visitors Rochdale also came into the match off a poor run of results, with their weekend’s 2-1 away loss at Fleetwood leaving them 17th in the League One standings.
As such, The Dale, who have not played at Old Trafford in 33 years were eyeing a cup upset in the Wednesday, September 25, clash in the hope of heaping more misery on the under fire Solskjaer.
It was however the hosts who begun the match brightly, with Greenwood nearly handing United the lead just two minutes into action.
However, United’s plenty of ball possession and dominance resulted to nothing as both sides headed into the break goalless.
The second half of the encounter saw Solksjaer make a double substitution, with Brandon Williams and Daniel James coming on for Tahith Chong and Phil Jones.
The visitors came closest to breaking the deadlock in the 53rd minute, but Camps’ who scuffed effort towards goal was brilliantly cleared by Wan Bissaka.
Greenwood went on to score the opener in the 68th minute, only for Luke Matheson to equalise for Rochdale eight minutes later.
With neither side finding the winner, the clash had to be settled in the shoot-outs that United eventually won 5-3 to qualify for the next round of the tournament.
