Arsenal made it two wins out of two in this season’s Europa League following a convincing 4-0 win over Standard Liege at the Emirates on Thursday night.
It was the club’s youngsters who put in a stellar show once again, with Gabriel Martinelli leading the line and backed up by Joe Willock and Reiss Nelson.
The trio, assisted experienced players in the likes of Ceballos and Mustafi, dominated the match from start to finish in an assured perfomance.
Martinelli’s show with a double
The Gunners took the lead inside 13 minutes when the Brazilian got to the end of Tierney’s pinpoint cross and headed home into the roof of the net.
He doubled the Gunners’ lead two minutes later, this time following superb work from Reiss Nelson, who played a vital role in the build-up as he squared the ball to Martinelli, who easily beat the keeper with a brilliant shot into the right side of the net.
Arsenal continued threatening through the flanks as the visitors failed to respond with any attack, and they were 3-0 up in the 22nd minute.
Joseph Willock found a loose ball inside the box and excellently buried it into the bottom right corner of the goal.
With Arsenal cruising now, they took their feet off the pedal a little in the remaining half, dictating play mainly in the midfield.
The visitors offered little resistance as they went to the break with the Gunners’ lead intact.
Ceballos scores his first of the campaign
On resumption, the Gunners picked from where they left in the first half, pressing the visitors from time-to-time.
Martinelli turned provider just before the hour-mark, lofting in an inviting ball which Dani Ceballos got on the end to put it into the back of the net.
Unai decided to introduce fresh legs, first pulling Maitland-Niles off for Nicolas Pepe, before withdrawing Joe Willock for Matteo Guendouzi.
With the points seemingly in the bag, the Gunners became comfortable running rings around their opponents and could make occasional breaks as they went in search of another goal to add to their tally.
The win saw Arsenal extend their lead at the top of the group with two wins out of two, having beaten Eintracht Frankfurt 3-0 in their opening group match.
