New twist in Bomet 2022 governor race – Weekly Citizen

The Bomet county gubernatorial politics is expected to change and take a new dimension after former governor Isaac Ruto of Chama Cha Mashinani signed a political pact with the ruling Jubilee party whose leader is Uhuru Kenyatta. It is now automatic that Ruto, who had high chances of taking over as the governor from Hillary Barchok in 2022 elections, is likely to concentrate on national politics as he is said to be close to the president, and his party is already working with the ruling party. In a situation that Ruto opts to concentrate on national politics, then, the game will be a three-horse race. They are CAS Joseph Mosonik of Petroleum, Julius Kones and Barchok while the rest are not relevant in the race for the premier and coveted position of governor of Bomet.

Hillary Barchok

Those who have declared interest for the seat include, Senator Christopher Langat, county member of parliament Joyce Korir, and Bomet Central MP, Ronald Tonui, will all be on the ballot for the governor’s seat. Barchok is also said to have high chances of being elected Bomet East MP compared to him defending his position. The seat in absence of Ruto, the current governor had slim chances of retaining the seat come 2022 though currently, he is engaged in doing development projects for the residents. Another important factor in motion is balancing top county seats, where Konoin is marginalized which is the area of Kones. Konoin as a sub-county has no top seat in the county, an issue that the residents may agree to back one of their own and Kones is the man to watch. If that is a factor, then Barchok has no chances because already, East is represented, Chepalungu and Sotik have had their time.

Isaac Ruto

Bomet Central is the area yet to get their time, but women county MP is from the area, while deputy speaker Shadrack Rotich is a resident of Sotik. Rotich might join the team of aspirants for governor in the coming poll but the race is mirrored to be a three-horse race. Mosonik and Kones, are the people to watch, especially if they agree to work as a team with the option of one going for the senate seat, while the other for governor. As time goes by, the combination of the two will deliver the best leaders in the county unless they do not agree on a formula as to who to go for the senate. But a Catholic priest told this writer that it is better for Ruto to go to national politics and leave Kones and the rest to compete for governor’s seat on a competitive platform. The Catholic priest from Kericho Catholic Diocese, who did not want to be named, advised Ruto that his level of politics belong to the national platform as he will be among those advising the President.
