– Frank Lampard has been backed to lead Chelsea to top four finish at the end of the season
– The Blues are still struggling so far this season as they sit 11th on the log after six matches
– Former Arsenal star Paul Merson however believes the Europa League champions can finish top four
Arsenal legend Paul Merson has backed Chelsea to finish in the top four of the Premier League this season under Frank Lampard.
The Blues are currently 11th on the table with eight points after six league matches – with their last game ending in a 2-1 defeat to Liverpool at the Stamford Bridge.
Trent Alexander-Arnold and Roberto Firmino scored two first half goals before World Cup winner N’golo Kante reduced his side’s deficit later in the game.
The west London club created a lot more chances in the game but they were unable to convert them before the wrap of the game.
Despite Chelsea failure to sign players during summer transfer window, the 51-year-old footballer turned pundit Merson seems satisfied by the spirit that the team has showed so far.
“People know I’m a Chelsea fan, and I was pleased with their performance on Sunday – not the result, but there’s a lot of positives to come out of that game,” Merson told Sky Sports.
“Look at Chelsea now and you think they could get in the top four. They’ve given a lot of people heart, and it’ll give Frank heart,” he submitted.
